BACK BY SCIENCE Journal
Satire. Nothing here is real research: all authors, data, DOIs and references are invented.

Aims and scope

Back by Science Journal (BBSJ) is a satirical journal. Readers submit a claim, and a machine writes a complete, realistic-looking research article whose results back it: structured abstract, methods, statistics, tables, figures, a discussion and references.

None of it is real. The authors, institutions, journals, references, DOIs, ISSN, metrics, indexes, data and statistics are invented. Nothing published here is evidence of anything. It is meant as a joke and a gift: prove that your friend makes the best tiramisu in Europe, or that your dog is objectively the most beautiful dog in the world.

Abstracts appear in the journal's public issues. The full text and the PDF belong to whoever commissioned the article.

Editorial rules

Every claim goes through a desk review before anything is written. The editors decline claims that would be harmful if taken seriously or that target people unkindly. When a claim is declined, you get a short explanation and your credit is returned in full.

Always welcome

  • Friends, family, colleagues and pets, named or not: the journal makes a good gift.
  • Hobbies, sports teams, food, places, habits and harmless opinions.
  • Light-hearted teasing, as long as it is affectionate.

Always declined

  • Sexual content of any kind.
  • Accusing a real, named person of a crime, abuse, illness or serious wrongdoing, or anything meant to humiliate or harass them.
  • Content that demeans people for their ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or nationality.
  • Encouraging self-harm, violence or anything dangerous.

Currently also declined

  • Health, medical and nutrition claims, treatments, cures and drugs (a joke about a healthy pet is fine).
  • Vaccines and vaccination.
  • Elections, voting, political parties, ideologies and current political controversies.
  • Claims about named public figures (politicians, celebrities, executives) or real companies and brands.

The editors may adjust these rules from time to time.
